Old Indian "Just A Bum"

Old Indian:  We’re still waiting for them to put together that Queen cover band rock opera performance, but we’re guessing their Saturday set at Flying Dog Brewery won’t be the magic moment either.  That’s ok, it’s pretty rad that they will be opening for Of Montreal and they are the only Frederick band able to play an opening set at Flying Dog Brewery this summer.  The later fact not being so rad, without having knowledge that other Frederick favorites, Heavy Lights and Seaknuckle will have the opportunity to showcase at the Flying Dog/ Frederick Playlist sponsored Frederick Fall Fest at the 200 E. Art Haus with headliner J Roddy Walston and the Business on October 10th.  Tickets just went on sale today and proceeds will benefit the Frederick Arts Council.

Old Indian recently released their very first ever brand new video for their single “Just A Bum” from their debut album Mumble.  We’re impressed with their ability to get more use out of the 200 E. Art Haus space and to make a holy saturated fat-partially hydrogenated oil-preservative injected mess of 7/11 food items.  Seems paybacks were hell though and we’re glad we’re not relegated to the little boys room after that little incident.  Guitars and all. Naaa-steee.  What else is nasty is those riffs though, “Just A Bum” is a sick jam and we love listening to it which ever way we can get it through our speakers.  If you like visuals with your jams, click on the YouTube video above.  Otherwise, pick up that sweet sweet vinyl!

Speaking of Mumble, it reminded us that we did a little interview with Old Indian back in the spring for the Frederick Music Showcase.  So, we dug up a few questions from the barely edited B side of the original interview where the band talked with us about the new album.  We hope you readers enjoy these little nuggs.  They might be a little stale, but we hear that they are still perfectly good.

I think I can sort of guess based on Cory’s vocal style, but tell me how the album title came about?

Evan Owens: The very first time we ever recorded, we were like what do we want to call this and I was like we should call it mumble and cory was like we should call it fuzz brew. And that was like a long time ago, so when it finally came around to what we were going to call it, I was like let’s call it mumble, but everyone picks up on that.

How was the Kickstarter process?

Evan Owens: It was awesome.  I was just so excited and so blown away that so many people donated to it.

Cory Springirth: It was fun. We made videos and everybody was funny in them.

Evan Owens: It took a lot of stress out of the situation.  It was a really nice cushion to have when you go into a creative process.  To think, oh wow, we have this much room.  Really, all of it went to the record.  It wasn’t like amps or tee shirts, strictly recording.

What went into the recording process?

Cory Springirth: It was a good experience; Kenny Eaton is a good guy at Mystery Ton studios.  Half the songs are newer songs and there’s some new ones too.  There’s a couple of songs that we’ve recorded before and a couple new ones.

Evan Owens: We had extensive planning before we even decided we were going to start recording. We’re going to make vinyl, we we’re going to do it this way, and we were all going to do what we wanted with this record.

Mark Weeks: We picked all the songs first, because we didn’t have time to waste.

Cory Springirth: We each had our own list of songs that we wanted on the record and then we went through them and actually made the track listing before we even started recording.  I think it’s a good mix, there’s 8 songs on the record, the records called mumble.  At the time we recorded we had been together 3 almost 4 years and didn’t have an actual full length record, so I think it’s a pretty good representation of where we started and where we are going.  There’s a lot of different songs with a lot of different sounds which is cool.  That’s what we like to do in our live performances too.  We’re not just like a super heavy band, even though we have heavier parts, just like we’re not a blues band, but we have blues parts.
